Starting a Jewelry Business? Here Are 8 Tips

Every jewelry artist began somewhere, and the fortunate ones who now have their pieces on jewelry magazine covers began with little or no money and no idea where the emerald and opal jewelry experience would take them.

Making jewelry is both therapeutic and profitable; you can do it from home, be your boss, work when you want, and, most importantly, it is a wonderful profession in which you add beauty to people's lives through your jewels. Making jewelry is enjoyable!

But why do so many talented jewelry makers fail along the way and never reach their full potential? Mostly for reasons unrelated to jewelry making, the most common four are a lack of commitment, procrastination, lack of confidence, and, of course, a lack of knowledge about business and marketing techniques.

Making a big decision like leaving your 'proper' job requires a lot of dedication to avoid ending up in debt and wondering, 'What did I do wrong?' If you truly want to succeed in this business, here are ten tips to help you avoid the most common beginner mistakes:

  • This is your trip, not anyone else's: be cautious of the advice you take and try to stay within your limits and desires. Stop listening to what others would do if they were you and start learning the business. Read jewelry websites and sales and marketing articles, and never stop learning new things.
  • Create a studio if you don't already have one. Yes, as small business owners, we must sacrifice our personal spaces for the sake of our company. Cluttering the dining room or working in a small corner will immediately impact your productivity and creativity. You require space, organization, light, and a door that can be closed whenever you decide your work for the day is complete.
  • Organize your time effectively: work as many hours a day as you would in a "proper" job—the truth is, you will need more than proper job hours to get everything done!
  • Create a blog/website. There are numerous free websites and blogs to choose from. Avoid using repetitive descriptions, and introduce yourself briefly in each post. Take your time writing a good biography and photographing yourself. Read other websites for examples and analyze the texts - which ones appeal to you the most and why? Promote yourself in any way you can think of.
  • When you're first starting, don't be afraid to ask relatives and friends for favors, and always reward them in any way you can. Wearing your gorgeous jewelry to parties and special events is a favor any female member of your family will love to do for you without having to buy it! They will return it to you after many people have seen your jewelry; you should provide them with business cards!
  • Learn to take good photos of your work, or you will never be able to sell it online. A simple lightbox can be constructed, and a digital camera and tripod are required. Learn how to use your camera's macro and light sensitivity settings, and experiment with backgrounds and displays. Do as stated above: research and work!
  • Being a jeweler entails more than just creating jewelry! Other sources of income are possible. Teach classes or workshops, sell online tutorials and kits, become a gem seller—and if you know HTML, you could even offer to make websites for jewelers!
  • Be extremely patient. There are no overnight successes in jewelry making, and you must demonstrate your dedication to your work. It will never come if you don't start now!
